Problem
Worn bearings and seal on 20 yr old Fisher & Paykel washing machine.
Tools
Basic tools required. Round steel driver slightly smaller in diameter than bearings helpful. Proper socket size would suffice. Pressure washer makes quick work of cleaning.
Repair & Advice
There are a few on-line videos worth watching before you begin. I found it easier to completely take the machine apart, ie: removing the outer drum from the sheet metal enclosure. Keeping track of all the parts and disassembly sequence with photos is helpful. The most time consuming task is cleaning! My rubber seal was shot allowing water (and gunk) to migrate down into the motor. A spray can of electric motor contact cleaner available at auto supply stores was crucial. The stator and rotor are separated in the process of breaking the machine down. Take the time to thoroughly clean both parts. I also used a citrus-based cleaner to floss the plastic areas well. I did not want to introduce any water in the cleaning of the motor.
The other main task to be extremely careful with is removing and installing the plastic electrical contacts from the controls to the main circuit board. It's best to take your time with this task. Practice your inner- most surgical skills.
My top bearing was in pieces upon removal. Tiny chunks of metal had migrated onto the rotor magnets. Again cleaning the motor should not be overlooked! The outer bearing race was embedded in place. It took a fair amount of careful tapping with a long tapered punch tor move the race without damage to the surrounding plastic housing. Cleaning of the bearing seats is also very important which allows the new bearing to be set with ease. Rather than tapping the bearings in with just a hammer, I found that using a properly sized driver seemed better than impacting the bearings. It made me cringe watching the instruction video "mechanics" hitting the bearings with a hammer. Another note: Don't forget the spacer between the two bearings. I found mine sitting off to the side when cleaning up...Ugh! I got to start all over.
Anyone with minimal mechanical skills will find this repair relatively straightforward. It was very satisfying listening to the machine humming along very happy. Hopefully my machine will last another twenty years!

Went on Utube and watched "Bearings & Seal Replacement and Service Fisher & Paykel Smartdrive Washingmachine" "Paul P" on how todo it, just followed how he did it. Love this machine because it was designed to be FIXED instead of thrown away.
