This was a simple 10 minute fix. it took more time to unbolt the dishwasher from the cabinet and slide it out the reinstall it in the cabinet. To put the replacement part in took about 2 minutes

An elderly friend had complained that his dishwasher was not functioning properly. Upon investigation, I found that the door closing cable on one side had broken and the other side had slipped off of its pulley

The door was opening under its own weight Rather than having the weight offset by the dishwasher's spring mechanism.
Tools
A Phillips head screwdriver.
Repair & Advice
Once the dishwasher was removed from under the counter, it was simply a matter of replacing the string. Easy.
