Repair & Advice
GE range came with the home we purchased last year. Original terminal block had a cross threaded terminal screw on L2 input, probably from the factory, which had a repair attempted in the past by adding 2 washers to the terminal to build up the gap between the screw head and terminal. Instead of replacing the bad block part, this repair created a loose high resistance connection, which over time heated up, melting the plastic block, releasing the metal contact bar which shorted out to the rear wiring cover, blowing a 1/8 inch hole in the metal cover and tripping a 50 amp breaker. Upon inspection, the rear wire cover had been damaged (bent in) which further added to the failure. The fix: Leave the blown breaker off, drag the range away from the wall and un-plug the range from the 240V outlet. Next, remove the rear wire cover panel (1/4 inch hex sheet metal screws) and re-bend the cover to original shape. Then remove wiring from old block; L1, L2 & neutral (range side and power cord side) leaving the ground wire and ground/neutral copper strap of the power cord connected to the range chassis. Remove the old contact block with 2 1/4 inch hex mounting screws. Mount new block and re-wire terminals using old grounding strap if useable. Otherwise, use the new ground strap provided with new terminal block kit WB17T10011 and bend to fit. Make sure all electrical connections are tight. Loose connections = resistance = high current = high heat and will melt the terminal! Re-install rear wire cover and plug range back in and only then, re-set the breaker. If all is well, slide range back against wall. 1/4 inch nut driver is all you need for this job as all screws and terminals are 1/4 inch hex head drive. Difficulty is rated as easy but use caution when working with electrical wiring. If in doubt, take pictures before dissassembly as all wiring is color coded and should be put back the same.
