Problem
The washer sounded like a jet engine during the spin cycle, cause was a bad upper bearing in the gear case
Tools
Screw driver, ratchet, pliers, hammer and chisel (for releasing the frozen tub spanner nut)
Repair & Advice
Except for the corroded and rusted tub spanner nut, the change out was rather simple in nature, If you are not handy I strongly recommend you rent or buy the spanner wrench.

Spanner wrench required to remove original tub nut.
Repair & Advice
My washer is a Kenmore 110.21302010. After removing the tub nut with spanner wrench there are 6 screws that hold the ring down. Screws were rusty and luckily I was able to get 5 with screwdriver but one had to be drilled out and extracted. There was also a spacer on the shaft that prevented tub removal. Wasn't sure how to get it off as it does not appear in any of the videos or instructions I've seen. I ended up prying it up with 2 screwdrivers. Took a bit of force and could fly up in your face if not protected. So what would seem like a straight forward job was set back by these issues. Once the tub was out, everything went smoothly. Transferred parts from old gearcase to new one and reinstalling was easy enough. I did end up having to get 6 new screws to secure the new ring, which is plastic and comes with a horseshoe clip. If it ever has to come apart again it'll be a breeze. End result is a washer that is much quieter than it was, total time was around 3 hours with setback and also making sure everything was thoroughly cleaned while it was apart.
P.S. - I'm not an appliance repair person, and your experience may differ from mine... I did as much advanced research as I could and then tackled the job. Good luck to all who need it, it's worth it!
