Problem
The Sears/Whirlpool trash compactor 665.7469100 (from the early 1970's) drawer was opening rough, dragging on the bottom. The nylon tired bearings had worn away.
Tools
20V Electric screwdriver, box end wrenches, paper towels, 4 1/2" grinder, JB-Weld, 10 ampere screwdriver, PB Blaster, and a bottle of Propel.
Repair & Advice
I ordered a complete set of nylon coated bearings that arrived in two days. The front bearings are sneakily mounted in the compactor frame and require a bit of skinny finger finessing to get the nuts off the back. A screwdriver with a super magnet will allow you to pull the loose nuts from the interior structure after they fall off the end of the bearing assemblies.
The replacement instructions are a nice idea until you try it. They suggest to bend off a metal tab that exposes a square hole under the new part. Supposedly, there is a square extrusion on the bottom of the new bearing that can be hammered into place. It might if the tab that you are supposed to remove would shear cleanly. I dug out a 4 1/2" grinder and made the surface nicely flat. Hammering the new bearing into the position, did not work. So I eventually rounded off the leading edge of the plastic bearing support (a tiny bit until it snapped into place). Repeated installation on the starboard side. Reassembled everything and wiped off my finger prints with the paper towels. Wife made me put my tools out of sight and out of "her" kitchen.
Drawer works as smoothly as new. Compactor should be good for another 45 years. Sure don't make them like they used to!
