Crackling/popping noise from switch

It began with a crackling/popping/arching noise when I put the front left burner on. I knew it was coming from the switch and researched on the Amana/Whirlpool website what part number I needed. I then copied and pasted that number in the Parts Dr. search bar and found the exact switch for significantly less that the manufacturers website listed it! When I removed the backing plate I discovered inside the recess at the top of the switch it was burned so it had in fact shorted inside the switch. Installation is pretty straightforward. Disconnect the power (unplug the stove) and remove the upper back plate to expose the panel wiring. Pull the knob off and loosen the 2 screws holding it to the panel. Unplug the switch and remove the screws. Align the screw holes and start the screws of the new switch in the panel. Plug in the wire to the back of the switch. The plugs are shaped so you can't get the wires mixed up making this part easy! The tricky part is getting the backing plate tabs to insert where they came out of and screw holes aligned. On a side note, the new switch has a longer stop on the shaft than the old one so the knob stuck out about twice as far. I used my Dremel tool with a narrow cone grinding bit to file down the plastic stop inside the knob for the correct fit (I didn't want to wait for a new knob to arrive). They do have a replacement switch with the correct fitting knob (switch kit) if you don't have a Dremel tool or would simply like to replace the whole part instead of grinding inside the knob.

The red light on the stove remained on even thought the burner was not in use and turned off.

After shutting off the power, i pulled the upper rear cover off the stove to access the rear of the control panel. Remove the temperature selector switch from the front of the control panel for the unit to be replaced. Remove the two screws from the front of the control panel holding the switch in place. Transfer one wire at a time from the old switch to the new switch to insure correct rewiring. Replace the new switch into the back of the control panel and replace and tighten the two screws that hold it in place. Replaced the temperature selector switch, noting there is an orientation slot in the switch. Position the selector to the off position. Replace the rear cover and screws. Turn the power back on to the stove and verify function by turning it on.
