Problem
Evaporator motor in freezer was whining. Sounded like the bearing case went bad or the seal dried up on fan blade shaft.

Repair & Advice
Replacement was a cinch. 1:1 replacement, I would have a pair of long nose pliers handy when connecting the plugs as they can be a little tight. Other than that, the repair was very easy. Do not use any power tools when removing/replacing screws as you are dealing with a thin gauge and soft metal and can easily strip where the screws secure. Do by hand…

Repair & Advice
Repair was simple enough. Most of the difficulty came in removing the ice maker electrical connection the cold air vent at the back of the freezer section. The ice maker power connector has small plastic tabs on the front and back side that must be released to unplug the unit. A small mirror is very helpful to get a view of the rear tab. Be careful and take your time as it appears they would be easy to break. After the icemaker was out the rear panel comes loose by removing four screws. In my model of GE refrigerator there is a plastic and styrofoam vent at the back of the freezer that direct some of the cold air flow into the refrigerator section from the blower. The plastic cover has a couple of screws in the base and then lifts straight up exposing the styrofoam part. It also removes by pulling straight up BUT mine was actually still frozen to the bottom of the freezer compartment. I loosened mine with a hair dryer. Be careful or you could end up breaking this. I don't think your airflow within the refrigerator would be right without it and as far as I can find there aren't replacements for the cover or the styrofoam part. The fan motor itself is pretty easy to change as you just unplug it and remove two screws. The plastic fan must be moved to the new motor. Be careful removing it and make sure you keep the same side of the fan facing forward. After that it's just a matter of reversing the steps.
