Repair & Advice
I have a 22 year old GE Profile side by side frig. A few weeks ago it stopped making ice. So I searched Parts Dr. for the updated model. I was concerned that none of the online videos or instructions matched my replacement steps. Since this ice maker works for so many models and has been updated since my original GE Frig, I wasn't hoping for an exact replacement and had to sort of figure it out as I went along. Most of the instructions said to keep the water filler cup and ice stripper to reinstall on the new ice maker. None of that worked for me. My old ice stripper wouldn't fit. It was too big and the new ice maker came with a water filler cup that worked perfectly. Removal of the ice maker was pretty much what most instructions talked about. First, I unplugged the refrigerator and removed the ice bucket. I didn't need to remove anything else. I had to remove a screw and bracket on the bottom of the ice maker though that no one mentioned. Then there were 2 screws that you just loosened on the top so you could raise the old ice maker and slip it out as was mentioned in the manual. The old power cord was round and didn't have any locking tabs do undo as the manual said it would when you unplug it. The new ice maker had a rectangular plug. Fortunately, the new one came with a power cord conversion. Plugging in the power cord and routing it appropriately took a little extra work. Manipulating and routing the cord around kept unplugging it from the socket. Eventually after trial and error I got it to seat and route properly and stay in the socket. This is where the locking tabs would have been handy. Then you just slip the new ice maker brackets over the 2 screws and tighten. There was no bottom bracket attachment like the old one so I just reinstalled the screw to cover the screw hole in the side of the freezer. After plugging in the frig and switching on the ice maker I had cubes in about 40 minutes. It took almost 3 days to fully fill the ice bucket again. The average cycle is once every 40 to 50 minutes when the freezer is at temperature. All in all for a 22 year old frig I am happy I can still get the parts and the ice tastes much better too.
