A loud tumbling noise was coming from the center of the refrigerator and it wasn't a fan.

Screwdriver.

Easy install. Our model refrigerator had a damper assembly in the refrigerator section, covered by a white cover. The damper has a tiny motorized door that opens and closes to let cold air from the freezer come in. The motor that opens and closes the tiny door flap was making the noise. I pulled off the first piece, having access to the screws hold the rest of the cover and removed that. Unscrewed motor from Mount, disconnected power clip, and then installed a new motor. Issue solved. Most Whirlpool sites didn't have this issue listed, but I read it was common.

Very noisy operation. Grinding and rattles coming from damper.

Phillips screwdriver

Snapped off the small cover. Removed the plastic cover with two screws. Slid out old damper. Disconnected connectors. Reverse to install the new damper. Exact replacement.

Frequent grinding noise when refrigerator running.

Flat screw driver, Philips screw driver.

Did research to determine the most likely cause of an intermittent grinding noise coming from inside the refrigerator. Determined it was likely coming from the damper control unit located inside at the back. Did research on where to buy a replacement part and selected PartsDirect as the most reputable in case of a problem and their fair pricing compared to other parts sources. Part came promptly and in good condition. Found a video on YouTube showing how to replace the damper control. Followed the video and completed the task in under 15 minutes including clearing space in the refrigerator, turning off the power, removing the old part and installing the new. Only tools used were a flat and a philips screw driver. Once the new part was installed, did a sound check and the grinding noise was completely eliminated.
