Ice maker mechanism stopped working

Ice maker on a 7 year old Whirlpool refrigerator started acting up after the 6 year mark. Ice not releasing from the tray and ice making cycle repeating, resulting in a solid sheet of ice in the tray requiring me to physically knock it out of the tray with a ice pick. Eventually the mechanism could no longer find home (determined from entering the service menu and doing a diagnostic). Ice tray slides in and out of position and has 2 plastic tabs that hold it in place. They have to be released before removing the tray. I used the butter knife to release the tabs. Super easy. New unit works flawlessly! Pro tip: place replacement unit in freezer and bring its temperature down to freezing before install if you want it to start making ice right away. The ice maker mechanism will not run a cycle until it reaches a certain temperature. I installed mine at room temp in the evening and by morning it had run just a few cycles.
