Problem
GE washer sounded terrible, very loud and no spinning. I found oil on belt and pulley which was causing it to slip.
Tools
Drill, bearing puller, and hammer.
Repair & Advice
The GE transmission lower C&U sealed bearing (made in China) leaked oil on to the belt. This is very common because I heard from an automotive engineer they "overfill" their bearings with too much oil (in all their products) and have no concept that when oil gets hot it "expands". To add insult to injury , the GE transmission unit is one piece (friction welded in 10 places) and non-serviceable with a cost of $192 new. I drilled out all the welds (5-10 mins) and was able to disassembly the unit. I pulled out the bad bearing with a bearing puller that grabs the inner diameter (5 mins) Hammered in a new high quality $7 SFK bearing (made in Sweden) and reassembled the unit using 6 machine screws (45 mins). The washer with the new bearing and belt works perfect with a total cost of around $20.
