When we took off the front of the washer the belt was laying on the bottom, shredded. So we knew what we needed to replace.

Problem
Would not wash or spin
Tools
Flathead screwdriver
Repair & Advice
Used screwdriver to open from panel of washing machine. After that, the belt is replaceable by hand if you put the belt around one of the pulleys and then slowly rotate the belt and other pulley as you push it into place.

Problem
The drive belt on my GE top load washer had aged and there was a burnt rubber smell during each use.
Tools
Putty knife, socket wrench
Repair & Advice
I unplugged my GE washer dryer combo. I then used the putty knife to remove the front of the washer (top load). Using the socket wrench, I partially loosened the 4 bolts holding the motor. This is at the very bottom and in the center. This allowed me to move the motor back just enough (a fraction of an inch) to loosen the tension of the old belt. I gently removed the old belt and gently put on the new belt. I then pulled the motor back towards me to reapply the tension of the belt. Holding the motor housing in place firmly, I tightened the 4 bolts back. I moved the belt back and forth to assure that the tension was adequate and that it would not slip off in any way. I put the front of the washer back on (snapped it back in place) and plugged the appliance back in. I ran an empty load and sat by to make sure the belt held. It did. I’ve run several loads since then and have had no problems. And the burnt rubber smell is, of course, no longer happening.
