Repair & Advice
I have an older hotpoint dryer. It was given to us way back in 1982 and up till now was still running strong. A few months ago the switch to start the unit began to stick in the on position. This eventually caused the starter coils to burn up. I was able to fix the switch by adding a bit of oil to the pivot point, but the motor needed to be replaced. I found it at a good price here on the Parts Dr and ordered the part. It looked quite a bit different, but seemed to be compatible. The very big problem was in the wiring. It was not even close to what I had. I found my proper wire connections by determining the wiring on the old motor, and then comparing the connections to the new motor. Old prints of electric dryers from online sources helped a lot here as the original manual had no prints. Once the correct connections were determined, it was easy to connect up the old wires to the new connector. There was an issue with the supplied connector as the numbered wires of the old dryer didnt match the numbered connectors. Fortunately, checking the motor revealed the proper connections and this was an easy fix. These motors have 4 main circuits withing them. One is the main motor coils, the other is the starting coils. there are two centrifugal switches that move when the motor speeds up. one to bypass the start coil, and one to bypass the start button. The start button bypass has its own pair of connections and is completely separate from the other motor circuits, while the start coil bypass, start coil, and run coil are combined into 3 connections. It is important that you determine which connection is which and the best way is to ring out the circuit with an ohm meter while activating the centrifugal switch manually. Once this is done and you know where the wires go, its pretty simple to make the connections and attach the motor to the dryer. Peformance wise, the motor runs quite smooth and quiet. With the added new pads and belt, it runs as good as it did 35 years ago.

Repair & Advice
Read the instructions because they tell you to rotate the wiring harness 180 degrees. Also pay attention to the clamp for the fan. If not re-installed properly the fan will move on the shaft.
