Door spring was broken.

Rachet, screwdriver.

A bit tedious to get to the part. Had to pull dishwasher out a little (but do not need to unhook electricity(turn off breaker) or unhook water as long as you have enough cord length to pull DW out about 2 feet. Had to remove inner door frame (lot of screws). My main problem was the fact the DW's left side was near a cabinet and it was difficult to have enough room to work on part. Thought I might have to pull entire DW but was able to make it work with available room.. Whirlpool was of no help whatsoever--this DW is 1 1/2 years old and it is inexcusable for a part like this to fail. Whirlpools position is one year warranty PERIOD. This Whirlpool was a replacement for a top end Kitchenaide (same manufacturer) that failed after 3 years due to a motor failure and too expensive to repair. Would no longer recommend products from this manufacturer.
