Problem
Washer sounded like a freight train when running on the spin cycle.
Tools
Socket set, appliance wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers.
Repair & Advice
I replaced the washer transmission (which came as a complete unit). The old transmission likely had a worn out lower bearing which made a loud noise whenever the shaft turned. The new unit shaft did not make a noise when turned, and this fixed the problem. The removal and replacement process was pretty straight forward after viewing a few videos on the subject. I will say that the most difficult step was removing the large nut that holds the tub to the transmission shaft. Some instructions called for a flange removal tool (which I did not have) - I ended up using a small chisel and hammer to turn the nut. When I put the nut back on, I made a tool out of a piece of wood - I drilled a 7/8" hole in the wood and then placed 2 1/4" bolts on either side of the hole which lined up with the slots in the washer nut. This could have been used to remove the nut, but I didn't think of this idea until later. I will say that ordering the part from Parts Dr was straight forward, and the shipping time was amazingly fast!

Problem
Maytag Centennial washer. "Freight train" loud when in spin cycle, leaking through tub seal.
Tools
Socket set, screwdrivers, spanner nut tool, hammer
Repair & Advice
To replace the gearcase, I needed the spanner nut tool. Tried to use conventional tools to remove it and damaged the nut. Taking all the parts off the old gearcase was straight forward, just needed to be careful not to damage any electrical wires. Old tub seal was clearly worn out, removed it and reinstalled all the parts.
So, only attempt this repair if you are comfortable completely taking a washer apart.
