Repair & Advice
My one year old Maytag washer was making an obnoxious and very loud grinding noise which seemed to occur mostly during the spin cycle. After reading about the problem on the internet indicating the shift actuator went out, I ordered an actuator from Parts Dr. I also ordered a drive pulley and cam kit just in case the teeth on those parts were damaged and it didn't cost any more for shipping. I replaced the actuator and still had the same problem, so I assumed the pulley and cam were damaged. When I disassembled the parts, I found a wad of what looked like dryer lint and fibers rolled into a ring around the drive shaft between the pulley and the cam which could have prevented the parts from engaging, causing the grinding noise. The spring on the top of the cam was not broken. I reassembled everything using the new parts in for good measure. Now the washer runs like new. I don't think the actuator was actually bad, so I saved it since reports indicate this part commonly fails. Also, the teeth on the pulley and cam didn't look damaged and the spring was in good shape, so I saved those, too. The parts I received from Parts Dr. were new and actual manufacturers parts for a very reasonable price. I had them shipped overnight and they arrived promptly. Parts Dr. is my new appliance repair parts source.
