Stove element switch fails, happens about twice a year. New elements just do not last as long as factory elements.
Tools
Screwdriver, needle nose pliers, wire cutter
Repair & Advice
Not a difficult repair. This is for a Maytag cook-top (no oven). Turn off the power, remove four screws under the burners so the stove top can be lifted and accessed from underneath. Remove the burner buttons that turn on/off the elements. Lift the stove top and remove clips underneath that hold the button elements in place. Undo the nut that holds the bad element in place (do not undo electric wires). Assemble new element if needed, use wire cutter or pliers to cut the knob handle/stick to the correct length. Unhook wires from existing element and place them in correct connection on new element. Secure new element with nut. Re-assemble the cook-top in reverse order.

Problem
Cooktop switch stem broke off.
Tools
Phillips screwdriver, 2 pliers, measuring tape
Repair & Advice
First turned off the circuit breaker for the cooktop and removed the burners and drip pans to expose 4 screws holding it down. Removed the broken switch after noting the wire colors and removing the 2 mounting screws. Temporarily installed the new switch to measure the stem length. Found that the mounting screws were slightly short and had to replace them with longer ones. Determined the correct knob adapter to use and mounted the knob on the stem. It took a few attempts to shorten the stem to the correct length by breaking it off. Reconnected the wiring and reinstalled the cooktop and burners. Turned on the circuit breaker and tested the switch OK.
