Evaporator coils were icing badly (defroster had failed)

Multimeter, screwdriver, pliers, soldering iron/heat gun (could have just used wire nuts)

Diagnosis was the bigger challenge. I eventually realized there were only 4 possible culprits: Bad heating element, bad thermostat, bad timer, refrigerant leak. I tested the heating element and found continuity, so it was OK. The thermostat resistance didn't change from room temp to ice-water so that was clearly bad. I had heard the timer clicking on and off, so it was probably OK. Refrigerant leak was a death sentence for the fridge. I figured I'd replace the (clearly dead) thermostat and see if things worked. Opened the panel, cut out the old one, soldered in the new one (with heat shrink) and reinstalled the panel. Problem solved!

Youtubed most probable cause of my issue and how to test to determine the root cause. Got online to Parts DR, ordered part and received it quickly. This is not the first time I have used ya'll as a life line and won't be the last.
