Ice was forming around the inside edges and bottom of the freezer door. Closer inspection revealed the freezer door gasket (bottom side) had come completely separated from its mooring, something you would never see unless you got down on your knees and looked. I do not know how long this condition existed, but based on the amount of gasket hanging loose, I'd say it was several months. The repair requires removing the freezer door, which is an easy one-person job. Cut and duct-taped a piece of 3/4 inch styrofoam insulation board over the freezer compartment. This works quite well and allows you to leisurely perform the repair. Removing the old gasket is no problem. The design of the replacement gasket is clever. There's an embedded polymer plastic edging that permits relatively easy insertion of the gasket that can be facilitated by using a (thin) putty blade edge to get insertion started. Inspect the gasket and find the corner where the polymer edge is (deliberately) broken [so that you can stretch the final corner of the gasket into place]. Install the gasket so that the broken corner of the polymer edge ends up on a bottom corner of the freezer door. Start the gasket install at one of the top corners of the freezer door. Push the polymer edge securely into place as you run the gasket along the edge of the door (you'll feel and even hear when the polymer edge has fully engaged attachment). Do the bottom of the door last. When you get to the last corner, you'll see how you have to give the gasket a bit of a pull-- just enough to stretch it around the last corner. Push the final bit of polymer edge into place and you're done. Putting the freezer door back on is a (PITA) two-person job because the door must be held level and the freezer drawer to which it is attached must be held firmly while inserting the door studs into the drawer brackets (which seem to not want to be easily found). You can do this as a one-person job, but you'll have to find a way to support one end of the freezer door (I used a roll of paper towels which when appropriately compressed kept one end of the door elevated at just the right height). I find the replacement gasket and its method of attachment to be superior to the OEM gasket and I'm confident I will not have this problem again for quite a while.

refrigerator/freezer having trouble keeping temp - best evidence was lack of ice. We diagnosed a failed gasket on the freezer, i.e., it was not making a seal.

The gasket on this particular fridge is a major PITA to install (it was just the freezer drawer gasket). You definitely need two people, and while this gasket was a better design than the OEM (that had to be glued in), one corner would not say, so I used silicon rubber which worked great. The hardest part was getting the stiffened portion in the slot, it was simply to small and the plastic trim on the fridge was very stiff (and cracked in one place).

Our lower freezer door did not have a tight seal and so ice was forming at the seal making it worse.

None other than a screw driver to loosen 2 screws allowing the door to come off. The old seal came off by hand as well as the new one.

The biggest problem was the seal comes bent in a box so its pushed in at certain locations. I tried per instructions to add heat to the seal where it was not perfect but that did not seem to work well. I installed the seal after removing the old one and when replacing the door I could see the light from the freezer interior coming through....not good. With some manipulation and time it filled out and now makes a good seal from what I can tell.
