Problem
My problem is the butt-wipes that run this country, probably the EPA, destroyed the washing machine industry, forcing water restrictions and designed changes that have resulted in new washers that don't wash cloths, take up to three times longer in the process of not washing them, and in machines that break in a few years. Thus what used to be an inexpensive thing thing to buy, worked well, and often lasted several decades, now cost a kings ransom, breaks often, and don't clean your cloths.
Tools
Tools most anyone would own, plus and inexpensive tub nut wrench.
Repair & Advice
Determined not to let the government ruin my laundry capability, I bought two older Kenmore machines. I took these two machines, and my existing eighteen year old Kenmore, and rebuilt two machines from the parts of the three. All rebuild parts I needed were still available from folks like yourself, thank you very much, and others. I replace every part that showed any wear and some for "just in case". I rebuilt the transmissions too. It took little effort, and I ended up with two virtually new rebuilt ten year old Kenmore's. The nice part, it cost me half the money of one of the newer government regulated pieces of crap you can buy new today. I should now be set for the rest of my life, judging by the reliability I've experienced with these older machines, and the fact I built a spare one. I'm only left wondering what the next thing the government will do to screw up my life.
