Problem
The freezer door handle fell off because a replaceable plastic part inside the handle broke
Tools
Phillips head screwdriver and Allen wrench
Repair & Advice
You can easily remove the handles from the fridge using an Allen wrench. One Allen screw on each end of the handle.
The handle attaches to the fridge using 4 parts: 1) a white plastic part (inside the tubular handle) that includes an approx ½” hole, 2) a Phillips head screw that is attached to the fridge door, 3) a metal grommet that both fits inside the white plastic part’s ½” hole and also around the door screw, 4) the Allen screw. A tightened Allen screw attaches the grommet to the door screw, thus keeping the handle in place.
My problem was caused when the white plastic piece broke at the ½” hole, thus preventing the grommet from staying in place, thus not holding the handle to the fridge.
The replacement white plastic part is slightly different than the original one. The new part has the metal grommet already built into the white plastic, so the original metal grommet will no longer be used. In my case, one end of the handle has the original parts and is still using the separate metal grommet, and the other end is using the new part without the original metal grommet.
The white plastic part is held in place inside the handle by one Phillips screw – remove this screw, remove old part, insert new part, replace screw. Place each side of the handle over door screws and tighten both Allen screws. Done.
No instructions were provided - you kinda figure it out on your own. Time will tell how long this part lasts. I suspect that the remaining original part will break before this replacement part does. If/When it does, I now know how to fix it.
