Problem
Trash compactor plastic gear (the ONLY plastic gear in the whole thing, so you know it's the guaranteed-to-fail part) did what plastic gears do; split into pieces under load.
Tools
Needle nose pliers, grease gun, ratchet set with small sizes for removing base plate.
Repair & Advice
This repair requires removing a metal plate from the bottom of the compactor which exposed the drive train (basically bicycle gear style chain drive from motor to the bits that lift and lower the plunger). You need to turn the drive gear remains by hand to get the plunger to the top of it's cycle before you pop off the c-clip holding the remains of the broken part in contact with the chain drive. Pull that remaining metal bit off, pop in the new gear, replace the c-clip and grease the new gear and drive chain. Replace the cover plate and you are done. The kit will have another plastic gear that attaches to the motor shaft with a press fit pin. Mine looked fine so I left the old one alone. There are also some plastic sleeves in the kit that didn't seem to match anything on my unit, maybe needed for a similar model.
