Repair & Advice
This whirlpool microwave is different than most of the illustrations on youtube. It's much more difficult to remove the door from the microwave itself, for instance. As a result, I separated the outer cover (to which the handle is mounted) from the inner door, to which the hinges are mounted. Three screws hold the cover to the "handle" end of the inner door; remove these, and then the putty knife can be used to lever the cover off the tabs that hold the outer cover to the inner door. Walk the putty knife down the slot between the inner door and outer cover around the bottom and top, and then slide the outer cover toward the hinged end of the door to loosen the tabs there. Lay the outer cover on a flat surface and use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove two screws holding the broken handle, and replace it with a new one. To reattach the outer cover, hold it against the inner door, slide it toward the handle end to engage the tabs on the hinge side, and snap the cover over the inner door to engage the tabs at the door's top and bottom. Replace the three screws holding the "handle end" of the outer door to the inner door.
