Problem
My frigidaire upright freezer started having freezing issues. Some of my frozen food started to soften and melt. I didnt have alot of airflow to the top of the freezer from the evaporator fan so I removed the panel inside and the evaporator coils were completely iced over.
Tools
Phillips Screwdriver and an ohm meter
Repair & Advice
I removed all the food products unplugged the unit and washed it out and let it air dry. I removed the 2 wires going to the defrost heater and ohmed it out. It showed an open circuit on the meter and did not beep meaning the heater was bad. I also removed the heater thermostat and placed it in a cup of ice water and salt to lower the temp. The thermostat won't engage until roughly 15degrees. After about 10 minutes it reached 15 degrees, clicked and the meter read closed circuit and beeped so it was still functioning properly. The new heater came with a thermostat so I went ahead and changed it anyway and kept the old for a spare. I clipped the new heater in place with the old metal strapping and plugged the wires back in and turned the freezer back on. I let it run 24 hours before placing food back in it to assure everything functioned properly. Problem solved new parts worked as they should

Problem
Coil freezing and freezer not keeping food frozen.
Tools
Phillip's head bit and drill.
Repair & Advice
Removed both lower shelves and bottom basket. Then removed 11 or 12 screws in coil cover to access coil and heater. Unplugged factory heater and installed replacement part. Replacement part was exact fit down to the plug ends. No modifications required. Reinstalled coil cover, basket and shelves. Freezer is back up and running. Total time, less than 1 hour.
