Problem
Ice door would not open.
Tools
Needle nose pliers, flat head screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver.
Repair & Advice
The ice door would not operate on my refrigerator, and there was a burning plastic smell coming from that area. To access the ice door and solenoid: 1) Unplug the refrigerator. 2) carefully remove the ice chute. Be careful not to break the plastic tabs that hold it in. 3) Pry off the front panel with a flat head screwdriver. Be careful not to break the plastic tabs that hold it in. 4) This will expose the recess that holds the ice door and solenoid. Next, unplug the electrical connector to the circuit board for the display/controls. Use the Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws that hold in the cover plate. This will expose the ice door and solenoid. In my case, the solenoid had fried and melted, stinking up the refrigerator and breaking the tang on the ice door hinge. The ice door heater was also still working, overheating the plastic hinge assembly and smelling things up further. 5) Unplug the two electrical lines that power the solenoid and unplug the electrical line for the ice door heater. Photograph the lines to the solenoid so that you get them back on the right way. 6) There are three screws that hold in the solenoid, but you only need to remove the two lower ones. 7) carefully remove the old solenoid by sliding it downward. If it is still good and you intend to reuse it, then make sure the actuator pin slides freely. Slide the actuator pin out as you drop the solenoid. you will need it separate to remount the new ice door and solenoid. 8) The ice door is held by a single Phillips screw holding a mental tab. Unscrew that screw and be careful not to lose the metal tab or the spring on the ice door. Both can fly free if you are not careful. Make note of how the spring is mounted to the ice door. 9) Make sure the spring on the new ice door is mounted correctly. If the new ice door does not come with a spring, re-use the old one. One end of the spring goes in a small hole on a tab on the ice door shaft. The other end pushes against the refrigerator door liner that the ice door mounts into. 10) Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.
