Repair & Advice
The door latch is accessible by removing the spring retainer ring that holds the rubber gasket in place. It turns out the latch was fine but had just been pushed out of the hole. I was able to re-insert it and it works fine now. I kept the replacement door latch because I expect it will happen again and eventually the door latch may require replacement. Replacing the door latch should also be possible this way, but I did not do that. That will require removing the old one and reconnecting the new one to the cable/connector.
