W10435302 Bearing Kit Installation Instructions

Posted on March 31, 2015

Some Whirlpool Cabrio, Kenmore Oasis, and Maytag Bravos direct drive top loading model washers have a bearing kit that can be used to replace the tub bearings and seal when they go bad.  When the tub bearings fail the washer can get very noisy during the spin cycle.  Some people describe the sound as sounding like a train or jet after it reaches its high speed during the spin cycle.  If you do not fix the problem with the bearings and keep using the washer you will eventually ruin the tub seal and water will start leaking from the bottom of the washer and water will spray onto the floor and bottom components of the washer.  This water will often look dark and grease colored that starts to leak from the washer at first.  If you find that you have bad tub bearings it is best to replace them sooner than later as it is much easier to replace the components.  If you let the problem go on for too long the bearings can rust into place or come apart while trying to remove them from the washing machine.  When the bearings fail the washer will also no longer spin concentrically which can cause the washer to go out of balance easier and sometimes display an “uL” (unbalanced load) error code).

What is needed for the repair?

If you find that you have bad tub bearings and need to replace them, you will first need to check with the model number from the tag on your washing machine to see if your washer is compatible with bearing kit part number PD00002260 (mfg # W10435302).  We have a list at the bottom of this page with the most common model numbers that this kit is compatible with.  If you do not see your model number listed there, please leave us a comment at the bottom of this page and with your model number and we will let you know if this kit is compatible with your model washer.  This kit does not work with any models that have a belt and gearcase.  This bearing kit includes both upper and lower tub bearings, tub seal, drive shaft, shaft nut, adhesive, grease, spacer tube, and instructions.  The bearings and tub seal in this kit are not sold separately.  The only other thing you will we need to provide are the tools listed below and a person capable of installing the bearing kit.

Tools Needed:

  • 1-1/4″ Wrench/Socket
  • 7/16″ Wrench/Socket
  • 1/4″ Hex Driver
  • Hammer

Special Tools Required:

You can purchase the bearing kit and tool kit from our online store by clicking the links below.

I do not see my model Maytag Bravos XL HE Top load model MVWB850YWO just wondering if the kit is compatible with this unit?

          • Ryan Posted on July 12, 2019

  2. joe Posted on January 2, 2016

    • Ryan Posted on February 23, 2016

    Thanks again!

  4. Ray Posted on February 5, 2016

Installed new bearings using press tool kit but found some space between spacer tube and bottom bearing washer, is that normal?

    • Ryan Posted on February 23, 2016

I don’t think that is normal.

    • Mike Posted on August 19, 2018

Happened to me too. How’d you make out? My choices are to either leave the space or hammer my bearings with a PVC ram.

      • Michael Posted on October 10, 2018

I ended up with about 1/8 inch of space between the spacer tube and top bearing. You can move the spacer tube up and down slightly with your finger. Is this a problem? Should it fit tightly with no up and down movement? The lower bearing appears to be seated correctly with about 3/16ths of an inch hanging down. Does that mean the upper bearing needs to be driven down more?

        • Steve Posted on August 19, 2019

I had the same problem, and it actually resulted in the shaft not being able to install (I assume because it was slightly cocked). You need to crank down on the bearing tool install nut harder – it was everything I could give it with my crescent wrench. I was close to going out to buy a new socket for my 3/4″ breaker bar, but finally got it tight. After that the shaft slipped in fine.
FYI – This is the second time I’m doing this. My first set of genuine whirlpool parts lasted about five years. Save the tools!

        • Tom Posted on June 15, 2022

Between the spacer and bottom bearing I think there is a 1/8″ steel washer.

  5. Adrian Posted on February 11, 2016

    Hello

  7. Jim Keller Posted on February 23, 2016

  9. Mark Posted on February 27, 2016

Will this kit fit Maytag MVWB950YG?

    • Ryan Posted on March 2, 2016

Yes this bearing kit is compatible with your model washer.

  10. Mark Posted on February 28, 2016

This will fit Maytag Bravos MVWB950YG – Installed it yester day.

I found that I couldn’t get the old shaft out (step 11) until I used a 4 pound steel hammer and banged hard – you might be surprised how much force it requires – claw hammer couldn’t cut it.

Teh most precarious part was step 20. I recommend putting some lube on the bottom bearing press, slipping on the bearing, then bearing washer and then carefully pushing it up onto the spacer tube, ensuring that the bearing washer is lined up evenly to the spacer tube. Then, don’t reef hard on the press nut, it should almost effortlessly seat the bearing as you lightly tighten the press nut.

Before you put the washer tub back in. I recommend taking the two little bolts off the drain trap and cleaning out the gunk cause it will eventually plug up. You’d be surprised how much crap is in there after just four years.

have a whirpool wfw9450wwoo. is this the kit I need?

    • Ryan Posted on October 6, 2016

Whirlpool does not sell a bearing kit for this model washer. The bearings are only sold with the rear outer tub assembly on this model washer.

  12. Bearing installation training Posted on June 21, 2016

I’ve searched several manuals looking for these clear and easy installation instructions. This is very helpuful!

  13. jean Posted on June 29, 2016

I decided that replacing the bearing was beyond my ability so I had factory service techs do the repair. If unable to separate the inner from the outer tub, this repair can not be made. You would need to buy the 2 tub assemblies which cost $$$ .Also there is the possibility that inner tub may crack or leak if not sealed properly when the bearing is installed. The tub assembly and motor for Maytag Bravos washers is warranted for 10 years but must be installed by factory service technicians to be covered by Maytag,. This does not include labor cost unless you have an extended service contract. It took 2 technicians a little over 1 hour – they replaced the inner and outer tubs and filter. Now my washer is running better than it did even when new. I purchased the Maytag REPAIR PLUS 1 service contract which covered all parts and labor and have additional year service coverage. It was pricey 2 $319.95 plus tax, but less than replacing my machine which is 4 years old- a low end replacement could be purchased for about $500 but I would rather keep this model since I have the matching dryer and did not want to replace both.

    • Steve Posted on June 27, 2021

This repair isn’t for everybody. It’s a real project, and takes some time, skill, and the hard-to-define ability to make sure that everything makes sense as you’re going through the repair. Playing for a half-day, if you’re figuring it out on the fly.

It’s absolutely worth doing yourself if you can, though. The price of a professional service call unfortunately makes it tempting just to replace the washer.

I used the PartsDr kit, with ceramic bearings from a third party. We’ll see if this lasts longer than the 2 years of the previous replacement (maybe not an OEM part – can’t recall now).

  14. Mark Posted on July 12, 2016

    Compatible with MVWX500XW1?

    • Ryan Posted on October 6, 2016

The bearings on your model washer are sold as part of the gearcase assembly part number PD00005154.

  21. Mike Depies Posted on November 10, 2016

Yes this kit will work with your model washer.

  23. Kenneth Posted on January 6, 2017

When I try to find out if this will work with my MVWX700XL2 google brings up this kit on numerous sources. I can’t find anything that is definitive that says it’s the right kit for my washer. Is it? If not could you steer me in the right direction? Tools instructions needed?

    • Ryan Posted on January 19, 2017

No this bearing kit is NOT compatible with your model washer. The bearings are part of the gearcase part number PD00006473.

      • Jonathan Posted on May 13, 2019

I have this same model. Is the gearcase harder to replace? That part is more expensive than the kit, but I haven’t seen any other options. I don’t want to spend money on the part then have to call out a tech to install it.

        • Ryan Posted on May 13, 2019

In most cases replacing the gearcase is an easier job that replacing the bearings as you don’t have to press bearings into the tub.

    • Matt Posted on July 4, 2017

      Kenneth,
I am having the same problem. This model doesn’t exist in most places. Did this part work for you? Any special tools needed?

      • Michael Posted on October 2, 2018

I have the same Maytag top load washer model # MVWB880BW0, and I was told by Maytag that kit W10435302 was NOT compatible for my model. They said I would have to order W10381078 which is the outer tub and drive shaft assembly (which has the bearings and seal already installed by the factory). This part is currently unavailable and on factory backorder. Which is the correct part?? My washer is making a louder noise than normal during the spin cycle, and it seems that the seal has failed and the bearings are beginning to rust and fail. No leak underneath yet. Any help appreciated! I am trying to figure out what I need to order to fix it.

I have a whirlpool top load washer #WTW4950XW2 will w10435302 part work?

  52. Terry Posted on May 17, 2019

I have a Kenmore 110- 28102 that uses that setup. I got it in 2014 and in about 2017 it started making noise so I bought a similar all included kit with the bearing tool. Last month it finally started leaking so I watched a few you tube videos and tore it down and replaced the shaft, bearing, and seal using the grease and silicon provided in the kit, The bearings appeared to be seated properly but when I went to install the upper bearing grease seal it wouldn’t go completely flush with the tub and was sticking up about a quarter inch but everything spun easily and was quiet so I let it sit for 24 hours to cure then ran a test load. It was perfectly quiet and smooth but started dripping a tiny bit about half way through the load. Now two weeks later the shaft area is squealing and leaking much worse and the bearings are already starting to get noisy again.
I was looking at your install notes and saw that the wear sleeve is supposed to be able to move and should be seated against the top bearing.
I never checked that and I think it wasn’t fully seated as the seal barely covered the top of the wear sleeve and I’m thinking it has now moved down and the seal has lost whatever seal it had as it’s probably riding on the shaft now and not the sleeve and is probably too high above the bearing. So I probably have to buy at least a new bearing and seal set if not a whole new shaft kit minus the tool. Is there anything I might have missed beside the wear sleeve not being tight against the bearing I should check before I waste my time and money yet again?
    Thanks, Terry

      Hi Terry,

It sounds like you may have bought a kit from Amazon or Ebay that includes the bearing kit and tool all as one packaged together kit. We have seen very poor results from those kits, so my guess would be that the issue you are having is caused by low quality aftermarket parts.

      • Terry Posted on May 18, 2019

Thanks, I figured that much and an going to order a Whirlpool branded OEM kit so I can get quality parts and the proper grease and sealant. Mine had Chinese bearings and who knows about the seal but at least the bearing install tool is good quality and I’ll use it again for the new parts when I find the best price and order them. Everyone sells the kits but most are knock offs that don’t last very long even if they don’t leak right away. It was a all inclusive eBay kit but at least the install tool is of nice quality and works.

Your blog is a testimony to your devotion to customer service. My Kenmore 110.2810 has the noise at high spin speeds and I suspect the bearing / shaft issue. The basket and agitator turn smoothly by hand without any detectable roughness. I can lift the basket about 1/2 an inch while the agitator remains fixed. Is this free play normal or is it an indicator of abnormal wear or looseness somewhere?
    Thanks,
    Cliff M

    • Ryan Posted on April 26, 2020

What you are describing is normal on these washers.

  63. Ed Posted on April 29, 2020

Awesome guide! Anyone run into where they are unable to (6) screw after putting in tub? Under the agitator.

  64. Debra Tate Posted on May 30, 2020

I installed my tub seal with the spring side up on maytag bravos washing machine. I think the spring was suppose to go down. Any one know if it will leak, or do I need to take it all apart again.
    Thanks

    • Ryan Posted on May 30, 2020

You will want to take it apart and install it in the correct direction.

I just replaced the tub bearings on my Maytag Bravo XL MVWB850WO. I’d like to run the diagnostics but the instructions weren’t inside the machine. Lots of videos online but none for my model. Is there somewhere that has these?
    Thanks.

In looking for this part for a mvwb835dw0

  68. Derek Bierman Posted on September 29, 2020

After I tightened the top and rear bearings using the bearing tool kit, there was a small space between the top bearing and spacer tube. Should there be a space or should it be tight? I had put everything back together and ran the diagnostics test. During agitation and spin cycle, I noticed a clinking sound. I am thinking it is from the spacer tube moving and hitting the bearings since there was a small space. Does this seem logical?

I’m replacing my bearings as we speak, is it normal that I can’t hammer the drive shaft out?

    • Ryan Posted on January 2, 2021

That is common. They can get rusted and corroded in place.

      • Steve Posted on June 27, 2021

I couldn’t get the shaft out with a regular claw hammer. A couple “taps” with an 8-lb sledge hammer worked very well.

will these parts fit a kenmore 110.28102310 mod. washer? Tub bearing shaft+seal kit w10435302. Which basket drive hub kit is better #280145 or hub assembly #w10820039?

    • Ryan Posted on March 4, 2021

280145 has been replaced with new part number W10820039.

  73. Todd Williams Posted on May 8, 2021

After replacing the bearings, how long should you wait before before using the washer? I assume the adhesive need some time to set/dry.

    Thank you!

    • Ryan Posted on May 8, 2021

      24 hours

  74. Todd Williams Posted on May 11, 2021

I installed the bearing kit over the weekend and everything seemed to go pretty well. I let it sit a full 48 hours to give the adhesive plenty of time to dry. Tonight I ran a cleaning cycle to test it since it was time to do it anyway and I have water dripping from the bottom of the washer. Did something go wrong with the seal? Is there any other reason or place that the water would be coming from? I had to pound on the seal pretty hard to get it to seat properly. I’m wondering if I could have damaged it in the process. I made sure there was plenty of adhesive around the seal where it meets the tub. If needed, is it possible to just replace the seal? I guess I’d have to disassemble the thing and remove the drive shaft to get the seal out (I’m guessing). Ugh!!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    • Ryan Posted on May 12, 2021

It would have to leak from either the seal/shaft area or a crack in the tub. Did you order an OEM Whirlpool bearing kit or aftermarket?

      • Todd Williams Posted on May 12, 2021

        OEM. Purchased locally.

Could it be related at all to the water filling system?

      • Todd Williams Posted on May 15, 2021

My leaking problem has been solved and corrected. My problem turned out being an improperly re-installed tub ring. I had all the clips attached except one, and that was the one nearest the water inlet tube. There is an extension of the tub ring lip that was supposed to go on the inside of the tub, but mine was seated improperly and was on the outside of the tub. This created a gap that allowed water to leak out and run down the outside of the tub. Properly re-seating the tub ring and ensuring that all the clips were securely fastened remedied the problem.

  77. Adam Cupskey Posted on December 18, 2021

How long do you have to let the adhesive/sealant on the tub cure?

  78. Billy Posted on February 2, 2022

I followed the instructions, and after 21, I noticed that the bottom bearing press looked ‘crooked’. I examined and it is out of plane with the metal bearing seat on the bottom of the tub.

I removed the press tool and measured with calipers and it’s about 1mm further out on one side than the other.

I checked and the bearings spin one way easily by finger, and the other way they kind of bind up.

I did clean and inspect both bearing seats before I began. I cleaned them with alcohol and a rag and I am sure there’s nothing in the way, but for some reason the press tool pressed it in crooked.

I will note that when the unit is on its side, the pres tool has almost a centimeter of wiggle. And before I tightened the nut, I made sure to hold it in the air centered in the shaft axis to prevent it from going in crooked!

I think this could have been prevented if the tool kit used an internal conical edge to be self centering on the outer bearing race. But that’s beside the point now.

From where I am now (crooked bottom bearing), How do I fix this?

  79. Clive Posted on March 19, 2022

I successfully installed the bearings and driveshaft but am concerned whether the tub seal is seated correctly. I hammered it into place with the pipe tool but the top of the seal is approx. 1/4 inch above the surface of the tub. Should it have gone down to be flush with the surface ? Thanks

I have a WTW8200YW took it apart and changed the tub bearings and shaft (WTW7300XW0).
All seems to go in just fine but when in spin cycle it stoped alot because UL code.
Looked closer on the tub and it was loose to lift approx 1/4 inch and it felt like the tub was missing a bushing do to it was not snug on shaft like it was when I took it of the old shaft( had to use a Jack to lift it of the shaft…as seen on u-tube)
What is missing or what is wrong with my repair?
