How To Remove & Install Drain Pump W10536347
Removing drain pump part number W10536347 is a simple task. When this pump fails, the washer will display “LD” on the display which means “Long Drain”. This pump can be found on Whirlpool Cabrio, Maytag Bravos, and Kenmore Oasis model washing machines. The pump can fail if something gets stuck in the pump (coin, clothing item, ect), and sometimes you can get lucky and just remove the object that was stuck in the pump. Other times the pump can break, so make sure so inspect the pump before putting it back in the washer.
How to the remove the drain pump:
- Unplug the washer
- Next, you will need to remove any water still in the washer (use a wetvac, bucket, towels, ect to do this)
- Turn off the water supply going to the washer & disconnect the hot & cold fill hoses to the washer
- Remove the drain hose from the wall or drain tub
- Tape the lid shut (so the lid doesn’t pop open)
- Carefully lay the washer down on its front side (place some towels or rugs on the floor to protect the washer).
- Note: On the bottom side of the washer, the drain pump is the larger of the two pumps (the recirculation pump is the smaller one).
- Remove the drain hose (discharge hose) from the pump. Loose then clamp and pull off the hose. Note there is a notch in the hose to line up when you put the hose back on.
- Remove the inlet hose to the pump. Loosen the clamp and remove the hose from the pump.
- Open the end cover on the pump and remove the wire connector.
- Remove the three 5/16″ screws securing the pump.
- The pump should now be free. Check to see if anything is caught in the impeller. If you notice any damage, or the pump still does not work then you will need to replace the drain pump assembly.
- Re-install in the reverse order. NOTE: The new pump includes a shield cover that goes between the pump and tub of the washer to protect the pump from any moisture falling onto it.

fine and dandy. why can’t anybody show how to install the new shield that comes with the part. there are no directions, and it is not self explanatory
Yes I understand where it goes between the pump and tub, just can’t seem to figure out how to line up the hole pattern?
When I ordered the new drain pump it came with a new shield with no directions how to install it. Can you help me out?
The shield cover goes between the pump and tub of the washer to protect the pump from any moisture falling onto it.
How do I plug in the wire in installing the new part? I can’t find where it plugs in.
The wire plug in should be in the same location as the original part. You have to flip open the access cover on the end to gain access to it.
Thank you!! I was able to do this fix with your help!!!
I tried for an hour to figure out how the shield is mounted? The holes in the shield do not line up with the mounting screws. Is there a picture showing how it is fastened? I know it goes between the tub and pump
Putting on the heat shield definitely isn’t intuitive, and I probably don’t have it 100% correct, but maybe I got it 90% right.
The placement looks a little more obvious when you put the heat shield up against the bottom of the tub instead of trying to figure out how it should fit against the pump..
Here are some pictures that I took of mine:

Here’s one on Amazon.com that kind of shows how you arrange it against the pump, using the supplied tape and rubber band:

I hope that helps.
Good luck!
so basically the shield is only held on with one screw…
Your pictures were a great help. Sears could not tell me how to do this but they would be more than happy to send a tech out at $75.00. Up and running.
THANK YOU, I couldn’t, for the life of me, figure it out.
Thanks. Huge help!
Thank you for the pics. I was about at my wits end figuring how this fit with pump. Did notice wire clip that goes in other hole. Other than that u got it absolutely right. Kudos and thanks again
partsdr.com is a good site, quick delivery. I followed the pictures above (good job) and was able to install the pump shield. BTW my Cabrio Washer was only 2 years old and I had to replace the pump. I’m disappointed with the Whirlpool product, I would gladly pay more for the washer components if they were made in the good old USA. It would put America back to work too!
Thought I had a drain pump issue but found that the pipe from the recirculation pump on the other side was plugged with gunk. If you take the back off the machine you will see this hose running top to bottom on the right hand side. It is or should be clear. I took it loose including the black elbows at each end and cleaned the hose out using a long brush made for cleaning a dryer vent. The machine is working fine now. It was stopping mid cycle and showing ld error on display, also making the humming sound. I assume this was this pump trying to push water to the top through the plugged hose. We will see if this fixes issue long term.
I replaced the pump on my Kenmore washer. I am getting a surging sound when the pump is running and the drain hose shakes side to side when the pump is running. Not sure why any thoughts
It is normal to get surging once all of the water has drained out of the washer. If the pump is surging while draining a full tub of water then you might have either a defective drain pump or the voltage powering the pump may not be consistent.
Thanks Ryan the surging is after the drum is empty. Ran 6 loads this weekend with no problem.
Good to hear that it is working well and that you didn’t have to hire a technician.
I to looked at this goofy shield and couldn’t figure it out only covers part of the pump I left it off I have two perfectly good motors with the impellers shot so if the motor should happen to get wet I ‘ve got spares nice and dry under the tub so chances are i’ll be looking for another impeller before I need an electric motor and so far you can’t just buy the pump separate thinking about remounting the pump with a longer tub drain hose and installing a coarse stainless screen to catch them coins or get a pump you can get parts for OR maybe load it up and take it to THE GUN RANGE up here in Saskatoon Canada this pump retails for $160 bucks and no kiss so far the only problem and I think its 8 years old next pump e bay
I bought the wp10536347 pump as a substitution for the original pump W10281682 pump. Everything fits but the plug is different on the new pump ( prongs run the other direction 90° different than the original and the connector is slightly different to where it won’t fit). I can redo the connectors on the end of the wires but which wire goes to which prong ?
It doesn’t matter which wire goes to which terminal.
What’s the piece of cardboard for? Looks like everything will work without it. Maybe some geek just threw it in to confuse us.
Hi Gary,
I think it is actually made of out fiberglass, and it is a water shield to protect the pump from water getting onto it.
