Tools
Power screwdriver, phillips and star bits.
Repair & Advice
IMPORTANT: I gave this control panel 4 instead of 5 stars because it didn't perfectly fit my Kenmore Elite. I guess Whirlpool is the OEM, but the Kenmore unit does NOT have two hole where two tabs of this control panel slip in. It's hard to describe in words, but when you try to attach this front panel, if something seems to be blocking it from going in, look at the underside (not inside, but bottom) of the front panel and you will see two white plastic tabs sticking out. These tabs have nowhere to go in my Kenmore. So I had to remove them with a Dremel. Not too tough, but I can imagine a regular homeowner having a little challenge about what to do with those tabs].
I had been fiddling around the my non-functional Kenmore Elite dishwasher for a while, so I was familiar with how to do the basic replacement of the front panel. Trying to remember how it was the first time, it wasn't difficult, but a couple of points were tricky. After unscrewing the 6 screws (Phillips or star) at the top/panel area, carefully remove the panel - it might take a bit of jiggling and manipulation (I have two of these units and one was easier than the other). There's a black plastic guard housing which connects at 4 points. 3 of the points are easy to spot - make sure you unlatch them without breaking the tabs. I did it with my fingers, but a screwdriver would work too. The 4th one is hidden in the middle of the black housing, you squeeze or cinch it in the middle. After that you need to detach all the connectors. TAKE A PHOTO BEFORE YOU BEGIN, so you know how to redo it! I found out my two Kenmore Elites have slightly different connector configurations! In other words, you can make mistakes, so take a photo with your handy cell phone! Remove the connectors to the door handle. Detach the two tabs for the control board CAREFULLY. This is one of those cases where I did it right the first time without thinking but afterwards, I did it wrong and almost broke the tabs! You just need to push in the INNER tab, and do NOT try to bend the OUTER tab, or else it can break. After you pull up the control panel past the two tabs, you pull it out from the unit and detach ONLY THE RIBBON CABLE from the broken face panel. Then reattach everything to the new panel. It should work just fine!
