Problem
While troubleshooting a problem with my dishwasher pump motor, I removed the pump impeller and motor several times. After the third time, the hub on the impeller where the small screw holds it down cracked. The replacement impeller was an exact match and was easy to replace.
Tools
Torx bit drivers to remove all the inside parts to access the impeller, small Allen wrenches for impeller screw, pliers for lower spray arm.
Repair & Advice
Remove baskets, unclip the plastic piece that runs up the back to the top sprayer, tip top forward to slide out from bottom. Use pliers to remove lower spray arm nut and lift off spray arm. Unscrew and remove large plastic cover under spray arm, then unscrew and remove pump cover. Grasp impeller with one hand and remove small hub screw. Pull up and maybe wiggle impeller off if necessary. Slide new one on. You'll have to push down on it to get the screw started. There's upward tension on it from the mechanical seal under it. Snug it down until screw stops turning and impeller is seated. Don't overtighten, you could crack the plastic hub. Spin the impeller by hand and make sure it's level and nothing's binding. There's some resistance from the mechanical seal. Reinstall pump cover and other plastic parts. Do not overtighten screws, just snug them hand tight. The threaded holes are plastic and can be easily stripped out if using a drill.
