How To Install W10248240 Load Sensing Switch

Posted on July 14, 2014

Some newer top load washing machines built by Whirlpool (also found under the Maytag and Kenmore brand names) use a load sensing switch to control the water level inside the washer.  On older washers this part was called a pressure switch.  This sensor switch is located in the top console of the washer, and is usually labeled as the water temperature control (A.T.C. control).  This switch senses the load inside the washer, and automatically adjusts the water level in the tub to the proper level.

Common symptoms that this part has when it fails are: filling with water at the very end of the cycle and agitating while filling with water.  Whirlpool has not released information on how to test this part out, so you will have to narrow down your problem with a process of elimination.  Other parts that can cause similar symptoms to a bad load sense switch are a bad timer, water inlet valve, and a clogged or kinked pressure hose (blowing through this is a good way to make sure it is clear).

If you are having repeated failures of this part, please check to make sure that the drain hose of the washing machine is at least 42″ from the floor and that it is draining into an open stand pipe or laundry tub.  If the drain hose is too low or the pipe/tub that the washing is draining into is not draining at a quick enough rate it can cause the water in the washer to be siphoned out which can damage the sensor switch and cause it to fail.

Here is how to replace the W10248240 Load Sensing Switch
First unplug the washing machine before working on it.

The sensor switch is labeled as the water temperature switch.  Remove this knob.

Next, you will need to access the top console.  This is done by using a putty knife to depress the two clips on the left & right hand sides.  Some models may use two Phillips screws on the back side of the washer to secure the console.  The console will then rotate back and out of the way.

Here is the console flipped out of the way

With the console flipped back and out of the way you will now have access to the sensor switch.  Remove the pressure hose and the two wire connectors going to the switch.  Then to remove the switch from the console you will need to lift up on the tab on the right hand side, and then rotate the switch 1/4 turn counter-clockwise to remove.

Re-install in the new part in the reverse order.

    Thanks

    • Ryan Posted on February 9, 2015

Part number W10177795 an old part number that has been replaced with new part number W10292584. This is the load sensing switch on your washer.

I really hope you can help us!! We have a May Centennial top load washing machine. We have to use the bulky setting for every load just to get enough water to wash the load. If we use ANY other setting the washer only fills with a tiny amount of water and the clothes don’t even get totally wet. Is this something that we can fix?

    Thanks so much!!

    • Ryan Posted on February 19, 2015

What is the model number of your washer?

  5. wayne Posted on March 12, 2015

any way to increase the water level in my maytag centennial washer.just got it and it doesn’t clean my greasy clothes very well.thanks

    • Ryan Posted on March 16, 2015

The water level is usually determine by the load size setting on the washer, or on some models it is auto sensing. The water level amount is not an adjustable setting other than the factory options.

My washer will not come on unless I slam it real hard I mean real hard and than push the button. What seems to be the problem ?

    • Ryan Posted on March 23, 2015

      Check the lid switch

  7. Keith Jones Posted on April 26, 2015

I have ordered the pressure switch on my Kenmore 800 series top load washer. I tested it and it is bad.

How can I by pass the pressure switch to do an emergency wash load? I can’t remember the color of the wires

to connect with a jumper wire. Hope you can help.

Sears warranty takes days before the part will arrive.

    • Ryan Posted on April 28, 2015

We do not recommend trying to bypass the pressure switch on a washing machine.

  8. Ashley Posted on June 7, 2015

I have Kenmore 800 top loader. Model #29822800. Water will not dispense on any cycle but will agitate when I removed the plugs from the pressure switch (3rd from the left with clear hose). Machine will still agitate when turned on. How do I know if my auto load sensor switch is bad vs timer vs both. I had problems in the past with water dispensing at the end of a cycle for about 10 seconds. Water is not dispensing at all now.

    • Ryan Posted on June 11, 2015

Unfortunately there are not any tests to narrow down the problem any further than you already have. I would start by replacing the sensor switch since it is the more common of the two parts to fail. If that doesn’t solve the problem then next replace the timer.

  9. Shelly Posted on July 19, 2015

Whirlpool washer model#wtw57esvw1 is going straight to agitation when I start it instead of filling up first. It will fill with water a 1/3 of the way up during agitation. Water will fill up during the rinse cycle. I checked the hoses and screens for clogs- all clear. Any suggestions what to check next? Thanks in advance for your help.

    • Ryan Posted on July 21, 2015

This type of problem is most commonly caused by a bad sensor switch but it can also be caused by a bad timer. Since we see a higher failure rate of the sensor switch, we recommend to start by replacing this part. There is currently not a way to test the sensor switch that we are aware of.

      • Shelly Posted on July 21, 2015

        Thanks!

  10. Sarah Posted on July 21, 2015

Will this switch also make it agitate slow I bought a washer and it seems that is not filling up according to the load and it seems like is not agitating fast enough

    • Ryan Posted on July 21, 2015

No, this part does not control the speed of the agitation.

  11. mike Posted on August 12, 2015

hey i had bad sensor switch, was agitating while fillind, blew into switch like some say , worked a month,, just put new switch on , and wont stop filling????????? never had problem with timer any thoughts???? mike

    • Ryan Posted on August 17, 2015

If the problem with the old sensor switch is the same as the problem with the new sensor switch then you might have a different problem or something causing the sensor switch to fail. If the new part is having a completely different problem than the old part then the new part could be defective.

  12. mike Posted on August 18, 2015

thanks but didnt have big electrical plug evenly all the way in,,, then it corrected its self thanks

  13. Denise Posted on September 9, 2015

I am having one of the same problems mentioned above. When I first turn washer on, it immediately agitates and fills part way. You mentioned that it is the sensor switch-is this the same as the Load sensor switch, or is there another switch to replace? Second question, is this switch under the front panel?
    Thanks.

    • Ryan Posted on September 17, 2015

The load sensor switch and sensor switch are the same thing. This part is located behind the top rear console like the pictures at the top of the page show.

  14. Michelle Posted on January 21, 2016

Thank you for this article!! It saved us a lot of money to it ourselves!! It was especially easy because you included pictures!!

  15. Kathy Posted on July 1, 2016

After reading that the load sensing switch is the water temperature switch. I tapped it about three times with the palm of my hand and “Praise God,” it stopped agitating while filling. Thanks for this very useful post! This is the second time I have had this problem with this machine. So I guess it must stick.

  16. Bruce Posted on January 19, 2017

I have Kenmore 800 Series washer that agitated while filling. Found your website which has great advice and pictures. I first disconnected the pressure hose from load sensor switch and blew hard through the hose. Very difficult to do as it seemed to be partially blocked. I took a 50cc syringe and pushed hot water through it several times to clear the hose. I let the hose dry and blew through it again and it seemed clear. I reattached it to the load sensor switch and it solved the problem. Have done 5 loads of wash without an issue.

  17. Daniel Posted on May 9, 2018

When starting the washer, it starts to fill fast then slows to a trickle after 5 seconds or so. I can open the door and close it again and this process repeats. It takes forever to fill but the washer seems to function ok going through its cycles just slow to fill after a few seconds. Any ideas?

    • Ryan Posted on May 30, 2018

It sounds like you are getting low water pressure on either the hot or cold water. First check that the water supply to the washer is good. If the water supply is good then you probably have a bad water inlet valve.

  18. Brian M Posted on February 8, 2019

WOW. You are amazing. After having ordered my part I was looking for and calling every repair store in Boise, you came to my rescue. I was told by the parts store I ordered from that the part I needed would be here in 3-5 days. On day 5, I called and found out the part was never ordered. Now, this was a major issue for me. Piles of laundry and a machine full of water, I needed that part now. I found you. Thank you, Lord. The price was 10 dollars less and overnight shipping was 30 dollars less than anyone else online. I had that part at 11 a.m. the next morning. 30 minutes later, I was doing laundry, loads of it. I can not thank you enough for the quality of your service and your commitment to value.

  19. Robert Posted on October 2, 2019

I have a Maytag Centennial top loader. I have already changed the pressure switch twice. Could the second switch be bad or could it be something else? model mvwc6esww

    • Robert Posted on October 2, 2019

In my previous post, I neglected to mention that my washer always fills to the top but never overflows.

      • Ryan Posted on October 3, 2019

If you open up the lid the “check” the water level on these washers, the washer will automatically fill to the highest level.

      • Robert Posted on October 3, 2019

Could the lid switch be bad??
